Jamil, after a stay of several years abroad, returns to the country, defeated and broken. He is hired as a clerk in the bookstore of young Tarek Ben Othman. Jamil is attracted to the widow Aïcha, fifteen years his senior and mother of Tarek. She, disturbed by her feelings towards Jamil, leaves the apartment, located above the bookstore.
