Following a painful delivery, Zakia, a young woman of the Tunisian bourgeoisie, becomes dependent on the Khochkhach (poppy) plant that her mother administers to her to calm her pain. After years of slow descent into the hell of dependence, she meets Khmaïs in an insane asylum where she rediscovers the desire to love and live.
